Basic AutoCAD® for Interior Designers Using AutoCAD® 2002 is an introductory text on the use of AutoCAD® for both 2D drawings and 3D modeling in the field of Interior Design. It provides a compilation of project/task-driven tutorials that give interior design students solid, practical know-how and provide numerous examples that follow current professional drafting conventions and standards. This approach combines explanations of commands with practical and systematic drafting procedures, allowing students to focus on what an interior designer can do with AutoCAD®.
Features of this text include:
- Easy-to-understand tutorials with step-by-step instructions
- Numerous illustrations and screen captures
- A listing of the command prompt output (what AutoCAD says) and input (what the user replies) for each AutoCAD command
- A description and/or explanation of both AutoCAD's and the user's actions for each AutoCAD command
- Chapter summaries highlighting the main points and commands of each chapter
From Book News, Inc.
This is an introductory text on the use of AutoCAD for both 2D drawings and 3D modeling in interior design, focusing on what the interior designer can do with the software, not just what the software can do. It provides step-by-step project- and task-driven tutorials and provides examples that follow current professional drafting conventions and standards, combining explanations of commands with practical drafting procedures. A listing of the command prompt output and input for each AutoCAD command is given, along with a description and explanation of both AutoCAD's and the user's actions for each command, and illustrations and screen captures on every page. The author is affiliated with Purdue University.

AutoCAD and Learning AutoCAD
Since its introduction into the world of design in 1982 by Autodesk, AutoCAD has become the most widely used PC design software for many disciplines, including interior design and architecture. In today's building industry, AutoCAD is a standard tool of design, drafting, and management. Without competent AutoCAD skills, a college graduate may find it difficult to find an entry-level job; a veteran designer may feel at a disadvantage. The importance of adequate AutoCAD training can never be overemphasized. AutoCAD is a comprehensive, complex computer-aided design system used in many different fields among which interior design is only a small area of application. This makes learning AutoCAD a difficult task for interior designers and interior design students because very few AutoCAD books are written specifically for interior designers. Most AutoCAD books are overloaded with information that is irrelevant to interior design. Those inexperienced in computing can easily be overwhelmed by the complex functions of AutoCAD and the cumbersome volume of most "complete" or "one-stop" AutoCAD books. Tutorials on how to create machine parts can very easily bore interior designers. To meet the special need of interior design students and professional interior designers, this book simplifies learning AutoCAD, and relates it as closely as possible to interior design applications.
About This Book
Basic AutoCAD® for Interior Designers Using AutoCAD® 2002 is a textbook for interior design students and is designed as their first AutoCAD book. It is an easy-to-understand tutorial with step-by-step instructions. It may also be used as a tutorial for interior design professionals with a need to catch up with the technological advancements of the field. This very pragmatic and focused book combines explanations of commands with practical and systematic drafting procedures to teach students an adequate set of skills that they can use immediately while in school and in the profession after graduation.
This book has the following unique features:
- A humanistic philosophy that respects the interior designer as an AutoCAD user.
- A focus on what an interior designer can do with AutoCAD rather than on what AutoCAD can do.
- An emphasis on drafting task procedures using appropriate AutoCAD commands rather than functions of individual AutoCAD commands.
- A careful selection of commands to simplify the learning process.
In this book, exercises with step-by-step instructions and comments are the primary format of instruction. These exercises can also be used as a practical how-to guide for future reference.
This book is for readers with minimal computing experience. Only basic knowledge and experience of Windows are expected. Upon finishing the tutorials in this book, the reader will have adequate skills to start as a CAD drafter in the design profession. This book is limited in scope. It treats AutoCAD as basically a drafting and presentation tool. Although AutoCAD can surely be used as a design tool, the creative design process is beyond the intended scope of this book. Meanwhile, the reader should remember that since this book is an introductory text, it does not cover all the AutoCAD skills and procedures that are used in the field of interior design.
How to Use This Book
This book is organized around the task of presenting a simple designed space in both 2D drawings and 3D modeling. The task is divided into chapters. Although the space is extremely simple, the presentational tasks require almost all the basic AutoCAD skills frequently used in the design profession. The chapters are sequential, so the reader can simply follow the chapters in order. Learning AutoCAD is similar to learning to play the piano; just as a pianist must know the keyboard and memorize the music, the user needs to know the AutoCAD functions and commands by heart. The simple exercises in this tutorial can be seen as piano studies in the training of a pianist. If these exercises are "practiced" repeatedly, the reader can become fluent in AutoCAD in a short period of time. While practicing the exercises, the reader needs to reflect on what he or she is doing and on what the potential usage for a certain command or procedure might be.
