“Very useful manual for all concerned with the theory and practice of this complex and elusive art.” -- Architect/planner Harry Brand

Cities and structures can be revitalized without losing their essence, character, and historic flavor. Veteran planner/architect Nahoum Cohen—who’s designed projects in Jaffa; Tel Aviv; Capua, Italy; and San Francisco, among many other urban locales proves it in this strategy and example-filled guide.

A comprehensive manual for the planning and architectural professional, Urban Planning Conservation and Preservation covers the rehabilitation and preservation not only of buildings, but of entire neighborhoods and cities. This book provides two valuable sets of tools. The first helps you analyze key elements of the urban environment, street grids, public areas, building styles, land uses, and other factors. Then this guide integrates (these) analytic elements into strategies for working with public and commercial interests to bring about beneficial preservation programs that save city neighborhoods.

SUCCESS STORIES FROM EUROPE, THE MIDDLE EAST, AND AMERICA DEMONSTRATE PRACTICAL STRATEGIES FOR CONSERVATION AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Inside and on the tool-loaded CD-ROM, you’ll find examples and practical methods to help you

  • Revitalize neglected Main Streets and downtowns while conserving heritage
  • Analyze physical data, such as density, size, and topography, for appropriate plans for specific neighborhoods
  • Fit plans to urban patterns—blocks, streets, building heights, squares, and neighborhood styles
  • Integrate neighborhood style, history, and sense of place into new development
  • Seamlessly incorporate green spaces, transportation, and infrastructure
  • Use key historical and cultural structures to best advantage
  • Advance your project with exemplary color photographs and plans
  • Enlist public and private investment

Preserve urban structures and neighborhoods with guidance from this book and its practical companion CD.
